Lake Health District Launches DAISY Award to Honor Extraordinary Nurses

In celebration of National Nurses Week taking place in May, Lake Health District is proud to announce the launch of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, a nationally recognized program that honors the compassionate and skillful care nurses provide every day.

The DAISY Award—standing for Diseases Attacking the Immune System—was established in 1999 by the family of Patrick Barnes, who passed away at age 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease. During his hospitalization, Patrick and his family were deeply touched by the clinical excellence and heartfelt compassion of the nurses who cared for him. In his memory, the Barnes family created the DAISY Foundation to honor nurses who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients.

Today, the DAISY Award is celebrated in over 5,000 healthcare facilities across the globe, and Lake Health District is honored to join this legacy of nurse recognition.

“Nurses are the backbone of healthcare, and we are incredibly proud of the dedicated, resilient, and compassionate team we have here at Lake Health District,” said Tory Coe, Chief Nursing Officer. “Our nurses go above and beyond every single day. Launching the DAISY Award is our way of saying, ‘We see you. We value you. Thank you.’”

At Lake Health District, patients, families, and fellow staff can nominate nurses throughout the year by sharing stories of extraordinary care and compassion. Then, once annually, one outstanding nurse will be selected by a committee to receive the Healer’s Touch sculpture—an internationally recognized symbol of the deep, human connection between nurse and patient.

“Nursing at Lake Health District is sacred. Life begins here, it sometimes ends here, and everything in between happens within these walls. It is an incredible honor to walk alongside our patients and their families through those moments—big and small. And now, through the DAISY Foundation, it’s just as much an honor to recognize and celebrate the nurses who make that journey so meaningful,” said Hannah Carlon Brollier, Clinical Nurse Educator at Lake Health District.

Each DAISY Award celebration will include a heartfelt ceremony and a signature cinnamon roll gathering, a DAISY tradition that started in honor of Patrick’s favorite treat.

“As a small hospital, we may not have all the bells and whistles of a large facility, but what we do have is heart,” said Coe. “Our nurses are the heart of Lake Health District, and we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on their incredible contributions.”

This upcoming Nurses Week, May 6-12—and every week—we celebrate the remarkable caregivers who are there in life’s most vulnerable moments. The DAISY Award is just one meaningful way Lake Health District is saying thank you.
